AGENDA ITEM # 8.2

REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL

Report Prepared by: Mike Davis, PLPD Chief

Date: February 5th, 2024

Subject: School Resource Officer Update

Report: Chief Davis along with Sheriff Klang, Chief Deputy Bradley and
Captain Kronstedt met with school administrators in reference to placing an officer
in the school. The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office will have a deputy
conducting SRO duties starting during the second week of February. Chief Davis
wanted to put the PD’s SRO back in but due to having two officers on light duty
that is not feasible at this time. Once officer had knee surgery and will be out until
March 5th and the other officer was involved in an on-duty car accident while
responding to a call. That officer won’t be back to full duty until after February
25th.

The school has had concerns about not having an officer in the school since there
was an incident with a parent back in December. In January there was another
incident where they had an intoxicated adult male walk into the school looking for
his son.

Chief Davis has contacted a local legislator in reference to the current SRO rules.
According to this legislator, the governor has said that he is willing to discuss the
issue and change it back to the way it was.

Council Action Requested: No council action requested.
