The Planning Commission had requested a joint meeting
with the City Council to discuss specific portions of the DRAFT Comprehensive Plan
that conflicted with the through-town expansion of Highway 371. A copy of their list is
attached. The following are points that were discussed:
Community Character:
♦ Cole Memorial Building now on Historical Register.
• Trailside Park will disappear—new site needs to be found for gathering space and
parking..
♦ Starting new traditions is difficult.
• Fire Tower property—not flat enough.
♦ West Twin Lake DNR property—not accessible.
• Sewer fields—sell or use for public.
• Moving social events—will it affect downtown character?
• Community character will change either way the highway goes-how do we keep
community character regardless where the highway goes.
♦ Establish certain types of business zones for each side of highway.
Integrated Growth Map:
• Not reviewed by enough people.
• A number of ideas were not incorporated into the map.
♦ The opportunity to work and live in close proximity drive the small town feeling.
Housing:
• Redevelopment creates a loss of housing.
• Parking on-street a problem.
