Pequot Lakes-Hwy 371 North
October 8, 2004
roads be completed before any Trunk Highway construction/access interruption begins.
2. MnDOT should install pre-emption equipment on any stoplights as part of the project.
3. The City would like to know of the County's comments to MnDOT and would like to have
more interaction with the County and MnDOT(I believe there is a concern that MnDOT gets
separate comments from the City and then separate comments from the County, instead of
joint comments from both when it is a City/County issue).
4. FYI: Generally speaking, as described in an origin-destination report mentioned below, at
least half of the traffic on TH 371 are through trips and a little less than half of the present
traffic is local.
Thus, this highway needs to be designed to allow the through trips to get "in and out"
without causing congestion for the local trips.
The origin-destination survey was performed by MnDOT for Pequot Lakes on August 12 and
13, 2002.
A video system monitoring license plates was set up on TH 371 north of town, on TH 371
`.. south of town, and on CSAH 11 east of town. The video system monitored traffic into and
out of town. The data was time-stamped.
All this data was then analyzed to see where, what direction, and when a vehicle entered
town and where, what direction, and when this same vehicle exited town.
The data was broken into observations between two stations no more than ten minutes apart
(straight thru trip),between ten minutes and one hour(extended thru trip),and not observed
`leaving' (local traffic).
The following summary showed that at least half of the traffic entering Pequot Lakes from
each direction is thru traffic.
Traffic coming in from the north
Straight thru trip towards Nisswa= 63%
Straight thru trip towards Breezy = 7%
Extended straight thru trip towards Nisswa=6%
Extended straight thru trip towards Breezy =2%
Local traffic=22%
CA\My DocumentsWity ClerMIGHWAY 371\Comments to MnDOT-100804-memo.doc
