Pequot Lakes City Hall
From: "Mary Gibbons"<Mary.Gibbons@senate.mn>
To: "Newsletter"<sen.carde.ruud @senate.mn>
Sent: Friday, December 05,2003 2:57 PM
Subject: Newsletter 30 from Senator Carrie Ruud
Week in Teview
Volume 1, Issue 30 December 5, 2003
NNIVIVNNNNNNIVNNNNNIVNNNNNNNNNNIVNIVIV NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
As you know our communities have been devastated by the kidnapping of Dru Sjodin. Dru was a
bridesmaid in my son's wedding this summer and I cannot tell you the range of emotions that this
horror brings each day.We pray for Dru's family and friends and for our communities.
NNNNNNIVNNNIVNNNNNNNNNNIVNNNNNNNNNNIV NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
Wednesday I had a very good visit in the Andersons' home in Pequot Lakes with members of NAMI
(National Alliance for the Mentally III).This is an issue that affects more families than one can
imagine. We must do a better job for our families and those family members that have become ill.
Yesterday I was nominated to be on the Rural Health Advisory Commission. This is a very important
group that deals with rural health issues and makes sure that rural patients receive the same level of
care as metro area patients. This position would be appointed by the Governor,so I am waiting to
hear his decision.
NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN.I.NNIVNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
Thursday the LCMR(Legislative Commission on Minnesota Resources) met. We finalized the proposal
form for projects to be submitted. This can be found on their website (http://www.lcmr.lesa.mn).
There is also a vacancy on the CAC(Citizens Advisory Council)for LCMR. If you would be interested
please let me know.
NNNIV NNNNIVNNNIVIV IVNNNNNNNNNN.VNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
At the meeting we learned about a web site that I would like to share with you.
The MPCA has a site that has all of the bodies of water and watersheds, etc.for the state of MN. It is
very interesting and informative.Try looking up your lake and see what you find at
www.pca.state.mn.w/dcita/edo.
NN NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNIVNNNNNNNIVNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
I recently received a letter from the Whitefish Area Property Owners Association (WAPOA) expressing
their support for the Brainerd Lakes Forest Legacy. This is a project I was not aware of, so I was very
interested. The proposal, which partners the Trust for Public Land, Potlatch, and the DNR,sets aside
about 5000 acres of forests near the Crow Wing and Pillsbury State Forests. The Brainerd Lakes
Forest Legacy would ensure wildlife habitat, scenic beauty and water quality for generations to come.
This sounds like a great project.
NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNMNNNN
Over the summer, I received a report from the Govemor's office that discussed the future of forestry in
Minnesota. I found this to be a really helpful report. You can access the full, 37-page report at the
DNR's website at http-://www.dnr.state.mn.us/fomstry.
IV IVNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNIVNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
The Week Ahead...
On Wednesday I will be in the Cities again for the Vital Forests/Vital Communities Conference. I really
enjoyed the last conference in September and am looking forward to attending this meeting. On
Friday I will be attending the Bemidji Area Forestry Affairs Council Meeting. After a brief discussion,
we'll be putting on our Sorrels and heading into the forest to check out the harvesting of diseased
12/08/2003
