August 23, 2013
Dear City Council members,
We received a letter from the city of Pequot Lakes dated July 12, 2013 in regard to a shed that we have
been constructing this summer. It was brought to our attention that we should have had a Land Use
Permit prior to construction and that we also should have a permit for our fence that we installed last
fall.
First of all, we apologize for not applying for the permits. We live in Coon Rapids where permits are not
needed for fencing that is under four feet in height nar is a permit needed for a structure under 120
square feet. That doesn't excuse us from not checking with the city to see if your codes were different.
We truly didn't cansider that there might be a need for permits for projects that are so small. The
pictures that have been included should give you an idea of the size of our projects. We've installed six
10 foot sections of split rail fence about a foot inside our lot line. There are 3 sections on the north lot
line and 3 sections on the south lot line. The shed that we'ue constructed is fairly small at 80 square feet.
We are now aware that the shed is too close to our lot line and we will be moving it so it complies with
the building codes for Pequot Lakes.
We wish to appeal the amount the after-the-fact permits are costing for our shed and fence.
We realize the error was ours but having to pay a total of $ 500.00 for the after-the-fact permits seems
excessive faK these small projects. We really hope that you will take this information into consideration.
Thank you for your time in addressing this issue.
Jon 8c Teri Kukachka
31060 Lakewood Ave.
pequot Lakes, Mn.
