Pequot Lakes-Hwy 371 North
July 19, 2005
A truck making a U-turn at the CSAH 17/Front Street urban section intersection is
impossible or very dangerous at the least. Trucks using the Grove Street intersection would
then need to head back north on Front Street, which is not a 10-ton road(limiting their
"access"with this option).
Semi-trucks wanting to come into this property from the south would need to go north to
the CSAH 16 intersection. A semi-truck making a U-turn at this intersection may be
impossible or very dangerous at the least.
A new full access intersection just for this driveway would have problems with it being on
a curve on TH 371 as well as for future access spacing/management.
It was discussed that MnDOT may need to pay the property owner for partial lost access.
However,if there are still trucks coming and going, this approach does not address the
dangerous U-turn maneuvers. Safety is one of this project's priorities and the trucks would
still have to do something to head northbound no matter how much the property owner was
paid.
Buying out this property completely and closing the access only addresses the situation in
the short-tern. The property will be used at some point and it will need some kind of
access.
MnDOT has had preliminary discussions with the property owner and is reviewing this area
for potential service roads, but has indicated that this will be a very difficult property to
access in this manner.
This area will be discussed further by the Committee pending the results of MnDOT's
review and discussions with the property owner.
C: TH 371 Committee Members
Duane Blanck, Crow Wing County
Don Anderson, WSN
WSN File
JAI30PQLAK\025-MnDOT TH371 Improvements\Meetings\071905 Council Workshop update-memo.doc
