Housing &Redevelopanent,4uthority
Of
Pequot Lakes
DD
West Grove Townbomes•Sibley Terrace•Parkview I&H•AlpineApts.
August 29, 2006
TO: Mayor Cathy Malecha
Pequot Lakes City Council
Clerk Sandy Peine
The Pequot Lakes Housing Authority is proud to inform the City of their successful
application for The Community Assistantship Program through the University of
Minnesota Center for Urban and Regional Affairs (CURA). Beginning September 2006,
a graduate student researcher will be working with the HRA Director to complete a
Housing Plan for the city. The scope of the Housing Plan will be a comprehensive
inventory of the housing stock within the urban area. The completed plan will provide a
database of variables such as age, condition, owner-occupied or rental, and will be tied to
the City's recently-adopted Comprehensive Plan.
The HRA is very excited about this new venture. The study will provide valuable data for
the City's future housing needs, and enhance the HRA's access to Federal and State
housing programs. The graduate research assistant selected will be given a minimal
`.- wage, compensation for mileage and other costs they may incur in their work. The cost
for this CURA program is estimated to be$6,000 over a four-month period. The HRA
has applied for, and been awarded, a Minnesota Housing Partnership Community
Housing Grant in the amount of$3,000. We are required to match this amount. The
HRA intends to use excess levy funds for the required match, but would appreciate any
amount of matching funds the City could provide. The program does not require all
funds be available at the onset of the project, but could be reimbursed to the HRA in the
next year's levy budget. We ask for your consideration and support.
The HRA will be supervising the selected researcher and their progress. There will be a
need for the student to access City records and perhaps work at the City Hall while
reviewing these records. We have spoken with Dawn, the P &Z Administrator, who has
indicated she would be most willing to provide this support. Additionally, Community
Growth Institute will be providing directional support, office space and equipment to the
researcher.
Thank you for your continual support of the Housing Authority!
Sinc ely,
Shar n hurlow
Executive Director
31203 N.Oak St.P.O.Box 243•Pequot Lakes,MN56472 •218-568-4555.218-568-8968(Fax) •pequotlakes.govofrce.com
