AGENDA ITEM #10.2
REPORT TO
CITY COUNCIL
Date: May 2, 2006
Subject: Polling place accessibility grant
Report: Staff is submitting a grant request for assistance in upgrading
the Cole Memorial Building for voter accessibility.
The City of Pequot Lakes will be moving its polling location to the Cole
Memorial building. The building currently has an accessibility ramp, but the
ramp is deteriorating and needs to be refurbished. Also, the sidewalk in front
of the building is in very poor shape and could cause someone to trip.
The City will also be assisting the Historical Society in funding an elevator
for the building. The total cost of the elevator is $46,000 including labor and
installation. The Historical Society has raised $26,000 of this amount. The
remaining cost needed to complete the elevator is $20,000. If installed, the
elevator would allow voters to enter on ground floor and take the elevator to
the voting location which is one floor up.
The grant request is as follows:
1. $1,275 — sidewalk replacement. Currently the sidewalk is cement. We
are proposing to blacktop the sidewalk.
2. $675 - replace material on accessible ramp.
3. $20,000 —remaining elevator cost which includes installation and
labor costs
Total request: $21,950
