PERMff APPROVAL TIME The Zoning Department has worked over the past four years to improve efficiency, which is one of our primary concerns. Since 2002,we have consistently improved upon the time it takes us to process an over-the-counter permit application. That trend has continued in 2005. Listed below is the change in time it has taken to approve a land use permit from 2002 to 2005. Although the table has several different figures,it is easy to interpret. The median number indicates that half of the applicants received their permit in that time or less,half in that time or more. For example, since 2003,half of the people received approval of their permit in four days or less. State law and the City's ordinance provides for a 6o day review period. The average is not always a good indicator because it can be skewed by the one or two applications that take significantly longer to approve than the majority of applications. Nevertheless,the average has continued to decrease from 2002. In 2005, our average approval was in 6.o days. If the one application of Don Babinski was removed (this application took 104 days to complete),then the average time to approval dropped to 4.7 days. This is almost half of the time it took to process an application back in 2002. Finally,the mode is the most common number of days it took to approve an application. In 2005, the most common outcome of submitting a land use application was that it was approved the next day. The second most common outcome was that it was approved on the same day. The Zoning Department strives to process all applications within one day, which is reflected in these numbers.
