Gartner to put together some of the pro's and con's of such a program
and also the start up costs of such a program. See attachment
In looking at this program I had mixed feelings about this kind of program for Pequot
Lakes and the communities that we serve. In the early stages I was against the program
due to my lack of understanding what the program could actually do and thought it was
more for"show"than actually to benefit the city. Most police departments that have a
snowmobile program do not ever use it with the exception of parades or maybe a city
event where they can ride by people and show off their"toy" This kind of program would
not work well for me. So what I chose to do was to educate myself on this kind of
program and so I met with our regions head of the DNR and that it Lt..Tom Provost.
I spent several hours talking to local game wardens and then to Lt. Tom Provost(Crosby)
who heads up the MN Snowmobile Enforcement division of the DNR. After talking with
Tom, I was sold on the fact that the citizens of Pequot lakes and those that we serve
would benefit from this kind of program. Lt. Provost assured me that he and I would
work very closely on making this program a success and making sure that his officers and
our officer's would work closely together on not only enforcement issues but also on
community policing efforts such as residence checks, training the public on safe
operation of snowmobiles etc. Lt. Provost told me that he would see this as a very strong
partnership between our two agencies and that it would very much serve those that work,
