POLICE JERRY BRAAM
218-568-8111 Chief of Police
Fax 218-568-5647 4638 County Road 11
plpd @pequotlakes-mn.gov Pequot Lakes, MN 56472
wv.,w.pequotlakes-rriri.gov
05-28-07
Jenkins Twp Contract:
Over the past several months I have been in contact with citizens from the Jenkins
Township discussing the possibility of Pequot Lakes Police Dept providing primary
police service much in the same manner that we currently do for the City of Jenkins. It is
important to know that no one in our dept. solicited these conversation.
Comments from the citizens were that they like what they see in our dept and the
resources that we have and would like to see that kind of coverage in their area.
I had preliminary talks with the township board members to structure a contract much
like we did with the City of Jenkins. I talked to Pequot Lakes City Councilman Dave
Sjoblad about this proposal and got his consent to move forward with preliminary talks.
Once Jim Oraskovich came on to the council and became the Police Liaison, I spoke to
him about this as well and was advised to continue the talks with Jenkins Twp.
At the April Jenkins Twp meeting I was present to give them an overview of our dept and
what we could provide. I was instructed to come up with a contract and a financial
L. commitment to provide service for them.
At the May meeting we presented the Jenkins Twp board with a proposal that was exactly
what we have for the City of Jenkins with the exception of the dollar amount. We
elected to propose to them a 1 '/2 yr contract for$15,000 for the remainder of the 2007
calendar year and then for$30,000 for 2008. This contract was discussed and voted on
by a unanimous approval to enter in to the agreement with the City of Pequot Lakes
pending approval from the Pequot Lakes City Council at it's June 5`h meeting.
Knowing that the Jenkins Twp only generated 27 calls for service in 2006 we know that
the call load will be low. However, more important to the citizens of Jenkins Twp was
the police visibility and that we would provide their citizens with security checks on their
homes and businesses when asked to do so.
I feel that this is a great opportunity for the City of Pequot Lakes and for Jenkins
Township. I am asking for the City of Pequot Lakes Council to vote in favor of entering
in to the agreement with Jenkins Township.
Respe tfully submitted,
e r
Chief of Police
