STAFF REPORT
Item: Accessory Structure Discussion
Background: The City of Pequot Lakes, as did the former Sibley Township, currently limits the
cumulative size of accessory structures on a property. Although the primary reason for this
regulation would be to avoid the cluttered feel of large, accessory structures, there are a number
of other reasons, including tax base, runoff, and limitations on guest houses and density.
For shoreline properties, the total cumulative accessory structure provided for is 1,28o square
feet. While Commission members seem to be comfortable with this standard for the first tier
from the lake, members have indicated that they would like to consider a "sliding scale" for
parcels that may have greater area and greater depth.
Based on the discussion in September, we have prepared the following addition to the
Ordinance:
Section 5.8, Subdivision 4
J. Accessory Structure Size. Where a parcel contains buildable land area outside of
the First Tier dimension as listed in Section 8.2, Subdivision 5, additional
accessory structure size cumulative maximum may be constructed on the parcel
outside of the First Tier at a rate consistent with the following table:
Lake Classification Square feet of additional accessory structure per
`.. 1,000 square feet of land area beyond first tier
General Development 64
Recreational Development 32
Natural Environment 16
The Staff is prepared to notice this amendment for public hearing if the Planning Commission
wishes to proceed.
City of Pequot Lakes Staff Report g_i
October 19,2oo6
