Office of the Land Commissioner
Thomas J.Cowell
(]322 Laurel Street,Suite 12, Brainerd,MN 56401
'R 218-824-1115
Fax 218-824-1070
8 tom.cowell(a)co.crow-win CROW WING COUNTY
.mn.us BRAINERD,MINNESOTA 56401
March 20,2006
Dawn Bittner
Zoning Administrator
City of Pequot Lakes
4638 County Road 11
Pequot Lakes,MN 56472
Re: Tax Forfeited Lands-Clarification
Dear Ms.Bittner:
For any tax forfeited tracts that the County proposes to sell at future public auctions, the City must be
notified and given the first option to acquire the property. The timeframe to acquire the property, however,
is limited. For example,I see that the City Council rejected the County Board's classification and intended
sale of tax forfeited land with property identification number as 29107017016Z009. Here is what will now
happen..............
1. I will go to the County Board and review the City's opposition to the intended sale of above.
2. I will ask the County Board to take action to"withhold"the tract for a period of 6 months.
3. After the County Board's action to"withhold",I will inform the City that the tract has been
"withheld"from public sale for a 6 month period. I will inform the City that they have 6 months
to make application to purchase the tract.
4. If no application has been received within the 6 month withholding period, the County Board is
"free"to pursue a public sale.
Now,there may be other tax forfeited lots that the County is not currently considering for sale and may be
of interest to the City. The City can always request to purchase tax forfeited lots for a public purpose. Just
send me a letter and I will review with the County Board. Of course,it is always my recommendation to
the County Board to sell at market value and that an independent third party appraisal is performed with the
governmental subdivision reimbursing the County for any appraisal costs.
I hope this clarifies the process.
If you have further questions, please advise.
Sincerel
Thomas J.Cow
Crow Wing d Land Commissio er
AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER
