The Pequot Lakes Ordinance provides that exterior work must be completed within 24 months from the issuance of the permit. you may extend that 6 months with any additional extension to be decided by the planning commission. The violation section of the ordinance provides that the city may prosecute violations as a misdemeanor. The other option is a more extreme option where the city determines the building to be a hazardous building because of its condition and ultimately through a court order require that the building be demolished. That does not sound like a reasonable option for this situation. Absent giving the property owner additional time to complete the project the remedy for the city would be prosecution. Prosecution may get the attention of the property owner and would hopefully generate some progress. I would suggest that you give the property a final notice to correct the problem and indicate after a certain date that the matter will be referred to the city's prosecuting attorney. The property owner is not available, having been hospitalized for an undetermined amount of time for undisclosed reasons. We continue to receive complaints from neighbors as the unfinished exterior is an eyesore and brings down property values. We are not able to deliver a violation letter informing him of a potential Administrative Fine. Do you have any suggestions for following up on this violation? Thank you for your help.
