He also gave
him a"no parts washing" sign, which should be placed at your shop sink. Please notify me when the
sign is posted.
The rest of this letter will discuss the need to prevent any spills in the vehicle service area from
entering the floor drain. Based on the information that we have, the facility's floor drain is in the
vehicle wash area, adjacent to the service area. To comply with Safe Drinking Water Act
regulations, you must demonstrate that Dotty Auto Co. has procedures in place to prevent any spill in
the service area from migrating into the wash area and into the floor drain. One satisfactory solution
would be to install a small berm or barrier. This would keep any spills in the service area out of the
wash area and still allow you to use the floor drain for vehicle washing only.
We understand that parts of the floor at the facility are either sloped or slanted. In the event of a
significant spill, gravity alone may not provide a sufficient barrier of protection for you, particularly
if there is a major spill in the service area that would migrate toward the open floor drain. We
believe the installation of a berm is the best method available to ensure that vehicle fluids remain out
of your wash area and floor drain. However, if you do have another alternative suggestion, please
provide it in writing within 30 days of your receipt of this letter and our technical review team will
consider it.
