SPECIAL INVITATION Date: July 9, 2008 To: Downtown Business Operators Downtown Property Owners From: Pequot Lakes Planning Commission Re: Changes to the Ordinance The City of Pequot Lakes is working to establish a "Grow Zone" in downtown Pequot Lakes, an area of the community where we actively strengthen our existing businesses and work to streamline the growth and development process. We need your help. At our Thursday, July 17, 2008 meeting, we will be considering modifications to the ordinance that would change nearly all uses in the Downtown Mixed Use zoning district from a conditional use to an allowed use. We would like you to attend and provide input on this important matter. Conditional uses are put in place so that a hearing is held for each application. While this slows down the process, it also allows for public input and involvement in the development of the downtown. We are trying to eliminate the conditional use process so as to reduce the time and expense in establishing a business in the downtown, but we want to make sure we don't open the floodgates to poor or undesirable development that would detract from the downtown. You have a significant stake in this and we value your thoughts and ideas. At the July 17 meeting, we will be specifically interested in knowing your comments on the proposed changes (see the attached memo) and identifying, with you, any businesses that would not be a good fit for the downtown and should be specifically excluded (adult uses, for example). Our meeting starts at 6:30. We promise to respect your time and hope you will be able to attend.
