MINUTES
`-- PEQUOT LAKES PLANNING COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING
JUNE 17,2010
PRESENT: Tom Adams, John Derksen, Bill Habein, Scott Pederson and Tom Woog.
ABSENT: Deb Brown, Mark Hallan and Cheri Seils.
CITY PLANNER: Charles L. Marohn, Jr., PE, AICP
ZONING ADMINISTRATOR: Dawn Bittner
COUNCIL LIAISONS: Craig Nagel.
COMPREHENSIVE PLAN UPDATE DISCUSSION:
Economic Development Section:
Growth at all costs was discussed. A statement should be included that states we
welcome and partner with businesses and have ordinances in place that strengthen and
build a healthy local economic environment. We have the framework for business and
should promote the town as well as businesses.
\., There are different ways of measuring growth. Our growth has been consistent. The way
we measure success is an increased habitation of our existing commercial properties and
increased intensity in use of our commercial space. We have overbuilt the amount of
commercial property as opposed to not under building it.
We need to add a statement acknowledging that Pequot Lakes has made positive steps in
the past 18 months. What is Pequot Lakes doing to make this happen and how can we
continue when the trend locally is the opposite? Cathy Malecha has worked to bring
businesses to town which is something the Chamber should be doing. We need more
Cathy Malecha's and fewer negative speakers for Pequot Lakes. Our community
approach needs to be more positive.
Near the Current Trends add a separate discussion on commercial real estate trends and
raise the idea how commercial real estate has been over built or over committed or that
we are not lacking in developable commercial properties.
Current Trends: The third sentence states that rapid growth has come to an end.
Recently Pequot Lakes has had economic growth but not in the past 5 years. We have
had some good things happen despite the economic environment. We acknowledge some
of the successes or growth despite the times but we realize we need to continue the path
to infill the gaps we have to be sustainable.
`-' MINUTES 1
Pequot Lakes Planning Commission
June 17, 2010
