� �..- Minnesota Department of Naturai Resources Northeast Region • 1201 East Highway 2 e Grand Rapids MN • 55744 August 14, 2012 City of Pequot Lakes Attn: Sandy Peine 4638 County Road 11 Pequot Lakes, MN 56472 RE: Sibley Lake Road Vacation Minnesota UEPARTUENTOF t1ATURAL8ES0UACES This is in reference to a preliminary review request to vacate a portion of a road which could provide public access opportunities abutting Sibley Lake: That part of Lind Street, Lot 15, Block 5, PEQUOT SHADY SHORES, according to the record plat thereof, Crow Wing County, Minnesota. In general, DNR has opposed vacations of public streets/corridors that provide or have the potential to provide access to waters. These public corridors often afford recreational opportunities such as shore fishing, canoeing, swimming, and observation areas. We also have concerns that the vacation of public corridors abutting or terminating at public waters may adversely affect natural resources due to the potential for additional shoreland development. These public corridors abutting or terminating at waters often provide an intact riparian zone that affords the ecological functions necessary to sustain fish and wildlife, protecting water quality. Nevertheless, we review each proposed vacation on its own merits. The DNR resource review for this vacation request found that while the Department had no objections to the road vacation, there was a loss of opportunity for public access in the winter months.
