4/3/2009
443 Lafayette Read N. [6511284-5000
St Paul, Mlaaeseta55155 MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF 1-800-DIAL-DLI
www.dellMe.mn.us LABOR & INDUSTRY m: [6511291.4198
MEMORANDUM
DATE: April 3, 2009
TO: Communities Leaders Considering Adoption of the State Building Code
FROM: Steve Hernick
State Building Official
SUBJECT: Adoption of the Minnesota State Building Code
As State Building Official for the Construction Codes and Licensing Division, I am pleased to provide
this packet of information to help you as you consider whether adoption of the Minnesota State
Building Code is right for your community.
Adoption of the State Building Code is optional in much of the state. While we at the codes division
believe adoption of the code provides a substantial benefit to the citizens of your community, the
decision is left up to you and your community to determine if it is right for you. In this packet we
provide you with the makeup, history and benefits of code adoption. We also provide information on
what to expect to properly administer the code including how most communities cover the related costs
for its administration without using general fund dollars. We also provide answers to some of the
common questions that have been raised in other communities that have gone through this same
decision process.
The Construction Codes and Licensing Division is committed to supporting you not only as you
consider adoption, but during the adoption process and after you begin your new program. We have a
designated staff person in each area of the state who is on call to answer your questions, attend
meetings and present information individually or to groups. Additional staff resources can be made
available if needed both before and after your program is up and running.
Feel free to contact the code representative in your area or me directly for questions, concerns or
comment you might have on the state building code.
2
