COMMUNITYGROWTH
I N S T I T U T E
Experts in Small Town Planning
NOTICE TO NETWORK COMMUNITIES
September 18, 2009
To Our Network Communities:
One of the benefits of being a Community Growth Institute Network Community is our annual
review of changes in state law. We know it is not easy to keep track of what is happening at the
state legislature and then to determine what new laws apply to your community's planning and
zoning efforts. Actually adapting and drafting the law changes to fit your local code is another
difficult task. For many communities, the result is an ordinance that, over time, becomes out of
step with state law. This can ultimately result in expensive and time-consuming problems.
The Network Community program is designed to help you avoid this situation. The Planning
Team here at Community Growth Institute has nearly completed the review of changes made
during the 2009 legislative session. In the coming weeks, you can expect to receive a summary
of these changes.
Where there is a need to amend your land use and subdivision ordinances to bring them into
compliance with state law, we will prepare the necessary resolutions and modifications to your
text. Those changes can be reviewed at a public hearing and adopted, as appropriate. Where
state law changes may give your community new options, we will provide a summary of those
options so that you can have a discussion locally and determine your preferred course of action.
Once this is completed, we will provide an update to your Network Portfolio, including your
code that now reflects changes made in the last session. All of this is part of our Network
Community program, so there is no additional charge to you.
If you should have any additional questions, please feel free to contact a planner with our office,
toll free, at 866.900.3064.Thank you.
Sincerely,
COMMUNITY GROWTH INSTITUTE
Ben Oleson,AICP
Executive Vice President,American Institute of Certified Planners
610 Fillmore Street, Suite 4 1 Alexandria, Minnesota 56308 1 866.900.3064 1 www.communitygrowth.com
