COMM'UM T' City a`
GIMcyV Pegriot
INSTITUTE Ues
STAFF REPORT
Application: Ordinance Amendment to allow Digital Signs
Applicant: City of Pequot Lakes
Agenda Item:4(a)
Background Information: The Staff has prepared draft language to clarify the city's
approach to digital signs. Two alternatives have been prepared. The first would allow
digital signs that are static in nature. We attempt to define static as being a sign that
changes message less than once per hour. We chose the hour interval, as opposed to the
24-hour interval as earlier suggested, as it seems more measurable and practical and
would have the same aesthetic impact.
A second approach, labeled Alternative 2, would expressly prohibit all digital signs. The
language provided is more clear than that already included in the Code.
Planning Commission Direction: The Planning Commission can recommend that
the City Council approve the amendment. The Planning Commission can also choose to
not recommend the amendment or the discussion can be tabled. This amendment is
City-initiated so we are not compelled to act.
Pequot Lakes Staff Report 4(a)-1
May 20,2010
