1 Create a mentorship program through the Chamber of Commerce between experienced entrepreneurs <br /> 2 and young self-starters joining the Pequot Lakes economic community. <br /> 3 Encourage businesses in the professional/service sector to locate on the perimeter of the downtown in <br /> 4 order to facilitate more space for retail directly in downtown. <br /> 5 Create an information-sharing system for retail employees to be better educated on the wares of other <br /> 6 local stores to keep shoppers from leaving town to buy certain items. <br /> 7 Provide more bicycle parking along the Paul Bunyan Trail in downtown to make it easier for recreational <br /> 8 users to stop. <br /> 9 Create expansion plans for water, sewer, and telecommunications so businesses can anticipate future <br /> 10 availability. <br /> 11 Define the commutershed of Pequot Lakes. <br /> 12 Establish a municipal parking strategy. <br /> 13 MID-TERM ACTIONS (1- 5 YEARS): <br /> 14 ❑ Identify properties in the business park that could successfully be in the downtown. Work to relocate <br /> 15 them and free up the business park property for a higher use. <br /> 16 ❑ Set aside land for future expansion of the Industrial Park. <br /> 17 ❑ Clarify restrictions in the permitting process for location, duration, and signage for running a transient <br /> 18 business within City limits. <br /> 19 ❑ Capitalize on a relationship with Central Lakes College in order to facilitate and foster human capital. <br /> 20 ❑ Provide affordable housing options for young families wishing to join the Pequot Lakes work force. <br /> 21 ❑ Provide sidewalks in all areas of the City where residents and tourists may be traversing through a <br /> 22 number of retail stores in one trip. <br /> 23 ❑ Create a Historical Tour Map that highlights historical places of interest in Pequot Lakes. This should <br /> 24 include different routes for people walking, biking or driving. Interesting stories that help people to <br /> 25 understand Pequot's heritage are valuable in that they help educate people and create allies for historical <br /> 26 preservation. <br /> 27 Provide incentives for infill and redevelopment of local businesses in the downtown area. <br /> 28 LONG-TERM ACTIONS (5 YEARS AND BEYOND): <br /> 29 Develop flexible design guidelines for businesses to emphasize the aesthetics and unique character of <br /> 30 Pequot Lakes. <br /> 31 Partner with the school system in order to better educate students on the entrepreneurial spirit in rural <br /> 32 economies. <br /> 33 PREVIOUSLY COMPLETED ACTIONS <br /> 34 Provide opportunities for local businesses to leverage capital through the use of public funds such as <br /> 35 through tax increment financing (TIF), revolving loans, or the installation of community development <br /> 36 corporations. <br /> 37 Require extractive use companies to restore the natural and scenic conditions of the land back to its <br /> 38 original form prior to extraction. <br /> 39 Provide incentives for infill and redevelopment of local businesses in the downtown area. <br /> 40 <br /> 211 Page <br />
