1 ❑ Publicize opportunities for civic engagement that draw on the expertise of and appeals to a diversity of <br /> 2 local residents(including long-time residents and newer citizens). <br /> 3 ❑ Partner with the school district and local artists to provide more opportunities for public art. <br /> 4 ❑ Prepare a briefing book on the Comprehensive Plan for all public office candidates. <br /> 5 ❑ Keep citizens and local groups involved as advocates and volunteers for implementing the goals of the <br /> 6 Comprehensive Plan. <br /> 7 ❑ Provide new property owners with a welcome packet outlining Best Management Practices for specific <br /> 8 property types. <br /> 9 ❑ Create a tour map that highlights historical, archeological,scenic, and natural places of interest in Pequot <br /> 10 Lakes.The map should include different routes for people walking, biking or driving. It should contain the <br /> 11 location of landmarks together with interesting stories that help people to understand the heritage of <br /> 12 Pequot Lakes. <br /> 13 LONG-TERM ACTIONS (S YEARS AND BEYOND): <br /> 14 ❑ Provide information for school programs to teach local history and traditions. <br /> 15 ❑ Restore and preserve historical buildings and sites. Consider them as future locations for a museum, <br /> 16 community center,or other community institution. <br /> 17 ❑ Partner with the school district and volunteer groups to organize heritage festivals and community <br /> 18 storytelling events. <br /> 19 ❑ Work with community groups to hold events celebrating the heritage of Native Americans and early <br /> 20 settlers to the area. <br /> 21 PREVIOUSLY COMPLETED ACTIONS <br /> 22 ❑ Monitor commercial development along roadways by adopting a zoning strategy that strengthens the <br /> 23 downtown commercial area, permits sensible development, and retains forested gateways leading into <br /> 24 Pequot Lakes. <br /> 25 ❑ Develop zoning strategies that facilitate the removal of blighted and un-maintained properties (cars on <br /> 26 front lawn,etc)that detracts from Pequot's character. <br /> 27 ❑ Provide for orderly business development in clustered,properly zoned development areas in the City. <br /> 28 ❑ Designate a rural, urban, and rural/urban transition zone in order to maintain the integrity of these <br /> 29 distinct areas. Each zone should promote development that fits within the context of existing <br /> 30 development. <br /> 31 ❑ Conduct research and seek professional help when needed to make informed land-use decisions. <br /> 32 ❑ Make local rules,regulations,and policies readily available to the public on-line and at City Hall. <br /> 33 ❑ Review the Comprehensive Plan bi-annually to measure the progress made and conduct updates that <br /> 34 involve the public as needed. <br /> 35 <br /> 51 Page <br />
