QUESTIONS FOR COUNCIL APPLICANTS: JOHN DERKSEN
1. What do you see as the future of Pequot Lakes?
There are several concerns that need to be addressed: first, the double tax standard
that was put into place at the time of the merger; second, because of the budget, the City
keeps putting off future needs that include infrastructure; and finally, we need to keep
searching for large employers that would bring employment to the City.
2. If appointed, what would like to see the City or Council accomplish within limited
financial constraints?
I would love to see the City develop a revolving loan fund - both for business and for
homeowners. It would need to be flexible in terms of both interest and payment terms.
Bacus just put such a plan in place.
3. What do you bring to the Council?
I bring energy and a great knowledge of the community/ Also, I have knowledge of
other communities. I have shown continued interest in the City by running for offices.
I have over 10 years of governmental experience by being on Planning and Zoning.
 4. What is your background?
Aside from the 10 years of governmental experience, I was an independent contractor
for 15 years, teacher for 15 years, and a First Responder for 26 years. I am a long-time
resident of Pequot Lakes.
5. The Council meets the first Tuesday of every month and occasionally on other
Tuesdays for a special meeting. Do you have anything that would be a conflict with
necessary meetings? You would also be asked to act as a liaison to the Park Board (2nd
Thursday at 4 p.m.), the School District (as needed), and the Fire Department
(Wednesdays, but check with them). Are you willing to devote your time to this?
Yes.
