I Fj
commul,q1trIVY
GAO
INSTITUTE
Toll Free 866.900.3064 Fax 866.924.1928
MEMO
Date: March 3, 2011
To: Mayor and City Council
Planning Commission
From: Charles Marohn, City Planner
Cc: Sandy Peine, City Clerk
Re: Proposal for School Bus Garage
It is my understanding that the potential of a school bus garage in the business park was
discussed at the City Council meeting this week. Specifically, it has been relayed to me
that Council Member Akerson has inquired of the Staff as to the status of this request and
has urged us to move it forward with all expediency.
I'm putting this memo together to brief the City Council so we all have the same
knowledge and background as we discuss this issue with the public and others.
I was informed by the staff at City Hall that the city had received calls regarding the
utilization of one of the business park lots for a school bus storage and maintenance
facility. The facility would be owned by the School District, the funds for which was part
of the recently-passed referendum.
I contacted Rick Linnell, the district superintendent,to discuss the situation. I wanted to
make him aware that a non-commercial use was not provided for in the City's code and
that, before they closed on any specific property, we should take some time to make sure
it would work. I wanted to make sure that the City of Pequot Lakes was not put in a
difficult position on this matter.
The following is a copy of my record of conversation, dated 2/16/11:
I called Rick Linnell to discuss the potential of them purchasing a lot in the
Pequot Lakes Industrial Park for bus maintenance and storage. I let him know
that I had heard this may be happening and wanted to discuss with him the
limitations of the property and concerns that the city might have with this. I told
him that the city is looking at ways to improve the return of the industrial park and
is working with landowners to subdivide properties and induce more
development. Each of the properties have sewer and water and a significant
public investment. Public officials in Pequot Lakes are keenly aware of the need
rr.T.,.,,7 r ,T,r :.Tn 7 rF 7 Tr , lrl rr7 .7T,T Tm 7r s7,.
