COMM"UMTY City of
CW]MONVYrn P'e not
INSTITUTE Lies—
NEW BUSINESS
Agenda Item: 8(b) Walkability Study
Background Information: The Community Character, Housing and Economic
Development sections of the Comprehensive Plan contain the following implementation
strategy:
Perform an assessment of walkability in the Grow Zone and throughout the
surrounding neighborhoods to determine areas of high and low pedestrian
mobility and identify priority corridors for mobility improvements.
We were unsuccessful in obtaining a SHIP grant for this work, but Staff would like to
proceed utilizing citizen volunteers to do the assessments. We are looking for three or
four volunteers that would be trained by Staff and perform evaluations of streets within
the downtown and surrounding neighborhoods. Volunteers would need to walk the
streets in pairs, take measurements, take photos and fill out forms on each block to
document walkability.
We would take this data, combine it with our mapping information, and use it to
complete the walkability assessment.
Once complete,we need to evaluate the data to determine strengths and weaknesses and
identify high-value improvements and key connections. The end result would be a series
of recommended improvements to be coordinated with the Roads and Streets
Department as maintenance is performed.
Using volunteers in this way, we would anticipate completing the Walkability Study by
the end of 2011.
Pequot Lakes Staff Report 8(b)-1
April 28,2011
