m
 Pequot Lakes Durnp
STS Project 97511-YB
March 10, 2003
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
1.
 TS CON5ULTANTS
~ STS Consultants, Ltd. (STS) has completed a Phase II Enviro.rmental Site Assessment
{ESA) for the Pequot Lakes Dump, located in Pequot Lakes in Crow Wing Counfy,
- Minnesota. The dump site is located on the west side of County State Aid Highway 11 and
east of Stafe Hiyhway 371, just north of the north boundary of the City of Pequot Lakes in
Crow Wing County, Minnesota.
The dump area is oval shaped, with a footprint that covers approximately one acre of
property. A portion of the dump site lies on property owned by the City of Pequot Lakes and
the rema+nder of the site lies on property owned by Mr. Charles Aathcke. Waste disposal at
- the Pequot Lakes Dump appears to have statted as early as 1940 and continued possib(y
• until 1980. Waste materiais including rubbish and pestieide drums were observed on the
round surface of the properly. Waste materials ecountered in the dump area were
observed at a maximum thickness of 15 feet and icluded pieces of concrete, shingles,

scrap metal, glass, plastic, househo(d waste, and surficial waste, Private domestic water
supply velis are located within 1/2 mile of the dump, and are likely screened in the
quaternary aquifer at depths less than 100 feet.
Five soil borings and three hand auger borings were advanced during fhe Phase li ESA. '
Observations were made of the distribution of solid waste across the property, and the
aparent vertical and horizonta) extents of the solid waste at the site were determined.
Surface soil samples, waste sampies, samples of native soil underlying waste,
" groundwater samples, and a surface vdater samp(e and sediment sampie from an
' adjacent pond were collected for laboratory analysis to evaluate the environmental
_ impacts from the solid waste. The conclusions based on this Phase II ESA are as
. foHows:
.,
W Site yeology consists of cover soils overlying solid waste (where present) and fill soils
(where present), overlying native soils ranging in consistency from fine to medium
- sand to clay with traces of gravel. A portion of the site lies in a low area with grassy
' veetation, trees, anci undergrowth. A pond is adjacent to the dutnp site along the
west bomdary and a steep slope extends from the top of the dump to the pond.
n
0
7HE INFRAHTRLICTUFIE IMPE}2ATIVE 1 Rsljeoo.do
