Mission Statement of the Park Commission To enrich the quality of community life and promote activities for families and people of all ages and abilities, while protecting open space and natural resources for current and future generations; to be financially responsible; and be a liaison between the community and city government. The Objective of the Parks and Open Space Master Plan To ensure existing park and recreational opportunities meet the needs of Pequot Lakes' residents today and in the future, the Commission has developed this Master Plan. The purpose of the Plan is to create a framework to ensure the community secures sufficient and appropriate land for: • Park development with a high quality of recreational opportunities • Open space and trails that meet the needs of all age groups and facets of the community • The continued development of existing park areas with amenities that are needed and desired by the residents and visitors who use them This Master Plan refines and implements the general direction established in the draft �- Pequot Lakes Comprehensive Plan, 2011 (EXHIBIT A). It is intended to become a stand-alone element that will guide park and recreation development over the next 10 to 15 years. As the City grows, it is the desire of the current Commission that the budget reflects this growth, so subsequent Commissions are enabled to fulfill the recommendations of both the Master Park Plan and the Pequot Lakes Comprehensive Plan. Natural Resources: • Protect and enhance natural resources and open space contributing to the character and vitality of Pequot Lakes. Recreation: • Make lakes, wetlands, and public forests more accessible to the public. • Seek to increase the existing recreational resource base and to connect all new and existing recreational features and facilities. We believe the citizens of Pequot Lakes want a community that protects and preserves its natural assets (natural features, recreation, and water quality). The investment in the development of parks,trails, and open space is not merely an expenditure, but an investment in the future well-being of individuals and groups, and contributes to the continued attractiveness and viability of the City.
