Land Donation The City and Cass County have been approached regarding a land donation that would encompass approximately 64 acres of land on the east and west sides of the south end of Mayo Lake. The Pequot Lakes Park Board has reviewed the donation and feels it would be an excellent opportunity for a rustic park that would allow hiking during the year and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. Below are some informational points you might find helpful for supporting the Park Board's plan. 1. The land to be donated is part of a Conservation Easement that severely restricts what can take place. It does not allow for residential development, agricultural use, industrial/commercial activity or mining. 2. Cass County stated they would accept the land, attach a 12 acre parcel they already own at the south portion of the donation, and then sell the entire portion as it does not fit their land development plan. 3. The Easement allows for unpaved paths/foot trails but does not allow motorized recreational uses. On the Cass County side, the trail is already established. 4. No alteration of the shoreline is allowed which means no boat landing would be added or allowed. S. This rustic park would be similar to the Uppgaard Wildlife Management Center in Ideal Township. John Ehlert, overseer of that park, states there are an average of two cars per day during the summer and far fewer during the winter. 6. This donation would allow the Park Board to further their goal of "obtaining prime park locations and high quality natural resource lands." (p. 8 Proposed Master Park Plan) 7. The City Attorney has researched the donation and we are able to accept land in Cass County. The Park Board is asking Planning and Zoning to support this opportunity to preserve land for recreational use as well as the lake itself by passing a motion in support of acceptance of this generous land donation.
