Current View of North Washin ton Street:
Last month, the Planning Commission(with input from the Streets Supervisor and City
Engineer) determined that the concept shown below was the best starting point for the
street design of the one block stretch of North Washington Avenue under consideration.
The street contains two driving lanes, diagonal parking on both sides and sidewalks on
both sides. This is essentially the same type of streetscape that currently exists.
The street would be designed so that it can be incrementally built upon (specifically the
north side) in the future. Once the land use intensifies, sidewalks can be extended and
parking spaces can be constructed as needed.
y,
:•alkway
w: dogonai
parking
The street section, although functional, is not overly accompanying to pedestrians. The
wide driving lanes and excessive parking area creates an uninviting space for pedestrians.
The lack of shade and green space and large amount of pavement will not encourage
pedestrians to utilize this section of street.
Curb Extensions:
If the city wishes to replace the street section that currently exists, staff encourages the
Planning Commission to consider the use of curb extensions or"bump-outs" at the south
`.- end of the street, adjacent to CSAH 11.
