I had a discussion with one of my co-workers who actually has the blueprints for the new highway plan. I requested to take a look and 1 do realize that things will change and in spite of this my idea remains the same. My plan was to raise funds for a pedestrian bridge and get materials and time donated to construct it. When I complete my snowmobile training course I noted that it said that the DNR welcomed contributions of materials and money for bridges such as this. Again thanks for the correspondence and bringing the new plan to my attention.This does not need to be a hurried thing, I am willing to make plans and foster interest for a perspective plan sometime down the road (no pun intended). There are a few things that weigh into the discussion of a pedestrian bridge over Highway 371 in Pequot Lakes. First, Mn/DOT has been working with the City of Pequot Lakes on a four-lane expansion and realignment of Highway 371 east of downtown.The project is scheduled for 2018.Traffic patterns will change as a result of this project, likely resulting in a positive effect for pedestrians and bicyclists crossing the existing highway.The cost of a multiuse trail bridge also weighs in to the discussion.The cost of a structure of this nature typically runs in the neighborhood of$1.5 million to $2 million.These would be shared cost with a local partner(s) (i.e. county, city, state agency (DNR)). Given the proposed realignment project in the near future, cost, and lack of a local partner at this time, our district would have a difficult time supporting a new trail bridge over highway 371. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. These are just some of the things that need to be considered. Sincerely, 9/16/2013
