Co RvrrY Peuot
NEW BUSINESS-TIMBER HARVESTING IN THE RURAL RESIDENTIAL ZONE
Background Information: Staff has received an inquiry regarding whether or not the
harvesting of timber is allowed in the "Rural Residential' Zone. Staff has determined
that because of the "purpose and intent" of said zoning district and the fact that
"Vegetation Removal, Clear Cutting" and "Vegetation Removal, Intensive" is "excluded"
in the Rural Residential Zone, timber harvesting is not allowed on properties with that
zoning classification.
An individual has requested this item be placed on the Planning Commission agenda for
discussion.
Section 17-5.6 RURAL RESIDENTIAL (RR)
1. Purpose and Intent: To provide a zoning classification that allows for low-
density residential development. Development in this zone is without municipal
utility service and with only limited demand for accessibility. Rural Residential
zoning should be used to preserve rural character.
Section 17-5.4 FOREST MANAGEMENT (FM)
1. Purpose and Intent: To provide a zoning classification for sustainable
management of forested areas,to establish and maintain timber resources, to
protect the natural environment,to preserve undeveloped areas and to provide
recreation opportunities. Development patterns are characterized as very low-
density residential without municipal utility service and with only limited demand
for accessibility. Forest Management zoning should be used to preserve rural
character.
Section 17-3.2. DEFINITIONS
246. Vegetation Removal, Clear Cutting. The removal of more then 75%
and up to 100% of a stand of trees and brush over 10 feet in height on a lot
or parcel of land up to 40 acres.
247. Vegetation Removal, Intensive. The complete removal of trees or shrubs
in a continuous path, strip row or block, excluding that clearing needed for
the construction of roads, driveways, walkways or permitted stairways,
lifts or landings.
FM RR
Vegetation Removal, Clear
Cutting C E
Vegetation Removal, Intensive E E
Pequot Lakes Staff Report 7(a)-1
June 19,2014
