This month we will focus on"Pedestrian Improvements." A committee has been formed by the
City to study at which point roads/streets need to be repaired or reconstructed. One part of the
. draft criteria includes the importance of the street in the multi-modal transportation system of
the City.
Currently, less than io%of the streets within the original plat have sidewalks. Most of the
sidewalks are located in the core downtown area. They are primarily used to access commercial
businesses and the high school. Very few of them extend into residential areas.
There are currently no multi-modal(snowmobile,bicycle, rollerblade, etc.) designated paths in
the DMU other than the Paul Bunyan trail.
The most important aspect of a multi-modal transportation system is connectivity. A fully
functional system should have no"gaps"in the system. There are not any significant"gaps"in
the current sidewalk layout in the City. However, most of the sidewalks terminate at the edge of
residential areas-limiting connectivity to those places.
Here's Example of a sidewalk ending abruptly at the intersection of Brown Street and South
Oak Street:
a
' .. .
r
 44 s
L .
Multi-modal Connection to Sibley Lake Park
In the past there has been limited discussion regarding connecting the Paul Bunyan Trail to
Sibley Lake Park. This is a terrific way to showcase the City's park to trail users and also
increase the safety for residents of Pequot that walk(or bike, etc.) to the park. Making the
connection would be a rather simple endeavor.
Pequot Lakes Staff Report
March 20,2014 2
