Example of an ideal Street Design:
EM
M ON
V
elk
Benches: Creating nodes for pedestrians to sit not only provide a utilitarian use of sitting to relax
during a day shopping, they also add to more street activity. The City should identify areas of the
DMU that would best be served benches. Keep in mind high pedestrian traffic areas and places with
shade(e.g. trees, buildings, etc.) are the best locations to place benches. The City may want to
consider purchasing cheap benches are first and move them around different locations. Then nicer,
more permanent benches can be placed in the locations where the benches were used the most.
Another thing to consider is to select a standardized bench and allow citizens or business owners the
opportunity to"sponsor"a bench and select a location for it. Quality benches require minimal
maintenance and add a tremendous amount of value to the overall vibrancy of the downtown.
Cheap/temporary Bench: Quality/"more permanent" Bench
7
Pequot Lakes Staff Report
April 17,2014 5
