Minutes to meeting of
Pequot Lakes Community Library
Board of Directors
May 21, 2013
Chairman John Longnecker called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. Members present were
John Longnecker, Sam Hennies, David Anderson, Lavone Sullivan, Renee Moodie, Jean
Clark and Claire Nagel. Also present: Liaison to City Council Jerry Akerson.
Sam, seconded by Jean, approved minutes of the April meeting.
David gave the treasurer's report. The library has Endowment certificates of deposit in the
amount of $78,236.72 and a rainy-day certificate of deposit in the amount of $5,065.97,
totaling $83,302.69. Since we must use the interest from the endowment CD's, David will
ask the banks to send quarterly interest checks to our account with the city. The total amount
in the library checking account is $19,351.98. Amount for deposit to the library account
includes: book sales, $859.04; building fund from anonymous donor, $10,000; dinner (from
John Marchwick), $500; endowment, $615; new printer (from John Ehlert), $372.90; new
software (from John and Doris Longnecker), $1,875.00; summer reading program ($250).
Jean, seconded by Lavone, approved the report.
Claire Nagel gave report on publicity. She will write news release about patrons being able to
access the library catalog by logging on to our Web site and clicking the appropriate place.
Otherwise all is going as usual.
John Longnecker, in his president's report, noted that he had attached a letter from Marian
Ridge, director of Kitchigami Regional Library System (KRLS) to Jon Henke of the
Crosslake Library, stating that the KRLS Board established a committee to meet with
representatives ftom the cities of Crosslake and Pequot Lakes, the purpose of which is to hold
ongoing discussions regarding the relationship of the two associate libraries and the KRLS in
preparation for the 2014 budget year. She said that the KRLS board proposes that the two
cities involved appoint a committee of three to meet with this group. We discussed the matter
and wondered if they meant three persons altogether for the group or three persons from each
of the Crosslake and Pequot Lakes libraries. John Longnecker will talk with Jon Henke and
we will table the proposal until we hear more from him.
Jean Clark gave a report on the Legacy Programs that we've been able to share with KRLS.
We have only two more programs for the entire year, one in June and one in July. These are
both programs for children that haven't been successful in the past since we have so many of
our own children's programs. However, these two might be more successful since they will
be done during the time of the children's reading program. There is no information from
KRLS as to why we're not given more opportunity to present the programs at our library.
We are still not sure when our book sale will be this summer. We assume that, as usual, it
will be on a weekend close to the July 4"' holiday. John said that Cathy Malecha will contact
Renee about possible help from her.
The Kids' Summer Reading Program will be underway May 30 with the first signup evening.
We have lots of good programs this year with posters and flyers already distributed and news
releases in the Echo. The theme this year is "Dig into Reading."
The library's SuperValu Brat and Hot Dog Sale will be held Fri. and Sat., July 12 and 13. We
will have a signup sheet at the main desk for volunteers.
Old business:
We had information, bookmarks and photos up at The Quest in Pequot the week of May 13
through 20. In turn, all our volunteers were invited in to the store for a free nutrition shake. A
few volunteers took advantage of the offer.
