City of
AGENDA ITEM #10.3
Pequot
Lakes------__
REPORT TO
CITY COUNCIL
Report Prepared by: Nancy Malecha
Date: November 3, 2015
Subject: Medicare Supplement Retiree Health Plan
Report: Minnesota Statute 471 .61 requires local units of
government to allow retirees and dependents to continue to
participate indefinitely in an employer-sponsored hospital,
medical, and dental insurance plan. Prior to Medicare
eligibility, City retirees and dependents are pooled in the
same health plan as active employees. However, once
retirees reach Medicare eligibility (age 65), their utilization
can be pooled with a group of Medicare eligible retirees.
The City does not currently have a Medicare supplement
health plan for retirees who are Medicare eligible.
HealthPartners, through NJPA, offers the attached Freedom
Plan. This is a pool of Medicare eligible retirees who want
to maintain a Medicare supplement health plan.
HealthPartners administers all billing and enrollment
information for this Plan at no cost to the City.
