City of Jenkins
218-568-4637 Office of the City Clerk P. O.Box 63 Jenkins,Minnesota 56456
July 14, 2008
Dear Pequot Lakes Mayor and City Council:
•
This letter is to inform you of recent actions taken by the Jenkins City Council regarding annexation of
Jenkins Township. At our May 12th meeting, the Jenkins Council adopted a resolution to appoint a
committee to investigate opportunities with the City of Pequot Lakes and Jenkins Township and enter into
any conversations regarding annexation with those entities. This was done in order to allow the City of
Jenkins to be included in any discussions involving this situation. As discussions between the two entities
continued, the Jenkins City Council deemed it necessary to take all steps in order to be considered in any
possible annexation. On June 3`d a special meeting was called and held at the Jenkins City Hall. At this
meeting a resolution was adopted that the City of Jenkins shall notice to the Township its intent to annex
and for the City Attorney to prepare a resolution and petition for annexation. That resolution and petition
has been prepared and the resolution was adopted and noticed to the Township Board.
It was not by design that the city of Jenkins took the above actions, but what we feel was out of necessity.
As with any planning matter, we feel that it is very important to involve the surrounding communities in
order to serve the best interest of all parties. The Jenkins Township Comprehensive Plan clearly speaks
to the participation, especially regarding annexation,of both municipalities as well as other communities.
We always felt that when discussions regarding annexation began, we would all come together. We feel
that we have made every attempt and have opened our door to be included in the possible annexation
discussions. However, upon receiving no response, we took what we feel were the necessary steps as
noted above in order to be considered. It is not our intent to have an adversarial relationship with you or
any of the surrounding communities, but we feel that we have a vested interest in this annexation process
as well. Also we have included a letter that we are sending to every landowner in the township stating
our position.
In closing, the Jenkins City Council formally request from the City of Pequot Lakes, that you postpone
any further discussions with Jenkins Township unless the City of Jenkins is included. We will continue to
keep our"open door"policy and want to continue our successful relationship with the City of Pequot
Lakes. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the actions of the Jenkins City Council, please do
not hesitate to contact any Council member or call City Hall at 218-568-4637.
Respectfully,
•
• .. ''.a. . and City Council of Jenkins
