At Issue:
• Current procedures for event permits in Pequot Lakes do not address many key issues
resulting from granted permits.
Rationale for needed change:
• Blocking off Government Drive before 7:00am on Saturday,June 4, 2022 without any
prior notification caused potential losses for our business.
• Street opened next morning, up to Lucky's, but tent remained leaving a total of 17
parking spots on.Government Drive until 11:00am on Sunday,June 5, 2022.
• Cans, bottles and cups were left on our property and tables which our staff had to clean
up Sunday morning.
Lakes Latte was staffed for Car Show weekend, which traditionally is a high traffic day for us.
Notification of the blocking of street and parking would have altered our overhead costs for the
day.
I spoke with Denise from the Pequot Lions Club and she said that this year was quite notable as
it was full of more new faces and registrants that had not previously attended. This means
potential new customers that saw a road closed sign instead of a busy coffee shop serving lunch
and breakfast. She also noted that the food truck they had booked cancelled and therefore
they did not have as much food at the event and, in fact, the Lions Club food sold out. Again,
this was a lost opportunity for our business to reach those new customers.
Both Saturday and Sunday morning, we fielded many complaints from our regular customers
about accessibility and parking. The band did not start until 6pm and was done at 9pm. The
majority of our sales occur between 7am and noon. We close at 3. Could the street have
remained open until at least noon?
Suggested changes to Event Permit procedures:
• Either the City or the permit applicant should be responsible for notifying potentially
affected businesses, especially for street or parking impacts.
• Specific times for street/parking closures should be established and honored.
• Clean up for event and surrounding area should be the specified responsibility of the
applicant.
• Available recourse for affected businesses.
