EDC Minutes
December 21,2021
on goals. Discussion ensued about compiling potential goals for 2022 and stated that
they will bring the ideas to the January meeting.
10. BLAEDC Update
Tyler Glynn discussed that Mark Jurchen represents the EDC Commission well and
that he did a great job presenting the WAC and SAC Waiver to the Council. He
suggested that a contact should be added to the press release and a link to the
information. He said this is a great opportunity for the City. Mr. Glynn discussed
developments that are happening in other communities and also discussed one of the
developers that has talked to the City of Pequot Lakes about building out the Trailside
Estates. He stated that this developer has been very successful in the Brainerd Lakes
Area, builds a quality product, and is transparent.
Mr. Glynn also mentioned the grant applications have closed for the Crow Wing
County childcare assistance grants. He stated that they had half a million dollars
available, and they received 29 applications for both existing daycare facilities and
new facilities which totaled 3.3 million dollars in requests. He stated BLAEDC had a
conversation with the County, and they may move up some that was earmarked for
the second round of funding through the ARPA dollars to potential get up to 1 million
dollars. Mr. Glynn stated the primary goal is to create daycare spots as they are
needed badly since the County is 1,200 spots short and he also informed the
commission that 43 daycare providers were lost since COVID started. He said they
have also received requests from current providers to upgrade or expand their
facilities and requests to help with wages and benefits for staff. Discussion ensued
about disbursing money geographically throughout the County.
Mr. Glynn said a big challenge with this is anyone starting a new daycare in home will
have about a three-month process before they get licensed, and a center-based
facility is about a nine-month process to get licensed. He said the plan right now is if
these facilities get approved the County will hold the money until they are licensed.
Discussion ensued about the HOGTL development and BLAEDC assistance or
involvement in the process.
11.
