Police City of Pequot City Hall <br /> 218-568-8111 Lakes 218-568-5222 <br /> Fax 218-568-5647 Fax 218-568-5860 <br /> N%_1 plpd @pequotlakes-mn.gov = 4638 County Road 11 cityhall @pequotlakes-mn.gov <br /> Fequot Lakes,MN 56472 <br /> www.pequotlakes-mn.gov <br /> February 3, 2009 <br /> Attn: Thomas Dumont <br /> District Traffic Engineer <br /> MN Dept of Transportation <br /> 3725 — 12t' Street N <br /> St Cloud MN 56303 <br /> RE: Traffic Safety on State Hwy 371 <br /> Within the Pequot Lakes City Limits <br /> Dear Mr. Dumont: <br /> We are writing to request your assistance with a serious traffic safety issue that is <br /> of daily concern for any driver going through our City by way of State Hwy 371. <br /> As you are aware, Hwy 371 is a two-lane Hwy from the City of Nisswa north. <br /> There are numerous driveways and streets having direct, uncontrolled access to <br /> Hwy 371 within our City limits. <br /> Due to the high number of complaints we receive from drivers traveling through <br /> Pequot Lakes on Hwy 371, as well as the number of personally witnessed <br /> accidents or close calls, we are asking your help with the two most dangerous <br /> intersections along the Hwy : State Hwy 371 and County Road 29 and State Hwy <br /> 371 and County Road 168. <br /> Your Department installed signage for right turns at these two intersections, <br /> noting they were for vehicles making right turns only. Unfortunately, these <br /> intersections continue to be areas where drivers use the right turn lanes to pass <br /> vehicles waiting to make left hand turns off of Hwy 371; the majority at a high <br /> rate of speed. Our Police Department stopped over 300 vehicles in 2007 and <br /> again in 2008 for this violation, issuing more than 200 citations each year in an <br /> attempt to stop this dangerous practice. <br /> We believe additional markings at these two intersections would reduce the <br /> number of drivers making illegal passes on the right and improve safety for all <br /> drivers traveling this stretch of road. Therefore, we are asking the Department of <br /> Transportation to add large right turn arrows to the pavement in the right turn <br /> lanes themselves assisting drivers to better understand that these lanes are for <br />
