Resolution 09-XX RESOLUTION REQUESTING PRIORITY FOR THE HIGHWAY 371 IMPROVEMENTS FROM THE MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION WHEREAS, Highway 371 is a critical interregional corridor, providing an economic link between the Twin Cities Region and the Central Lakes Region of Minnesota,and WHEREAS, the Federal Government and the State of Minnesota have recognized the significance of the Highway 371 corridor in the past and,in doing so, have made considerable investments in order to improve the corridor south of Nisswa to a 4-lane Expressway Design,and WHEREAS, the 16 miles of Highway 371 between Nisswa and Pine River, including Pequot Lakes,Jenkins, Crow Wing County and Cass County, requires similar improvement to a 4-lane Expressway Design in order to address safety,travel-time and environmental concerns,and WHEREAS, the City of Pequot Lakes, at commitment of great time and expense, has undertaken efforts to study the alternative alignment alternative and, in doing so, has educated the local population and created a stable decision-making environment, and WHEREAS, the City of Pequot Lakes has passed resolutions of support and approved memorandums of understanding to demonstrate the City's unambiguous support for the project,with the alternative alignment, and WHEREAS, the City of Pequot Lakes has expressed a strong desire to grant municipal consent for the project at the earliest possible date,and WHEREAS, it is clear that, without assistance from the Federal Government, the project is unlikely to proceed in the foreseeable future,and WHEREAS, in order to obtain funding priority from the Federal Government, the environmental review needs to be complete and municipal consent needs to be granted. THE CITY OF PEQUOT LAKES DOES HEREBY REQUEST that the Minnesota Department of Transportation dedicate the staff and resources needed to finalize the Highway 371 project,making this a top priority, so that together with the project's other partners, Nisswa,Jenkins, Pine River, Crow Wing County and Cass County,we can aggressively pursue Federal funding.
