January 6, 2009
To: City Council
From: Nancy Adams, Mayor
Background: Because I am new to the liaison role, I have tried to articulate what a
liaison should do. This"job description"will remind each of us what we can/should do
to make our meetings even more productive.
You will also note the new role of liaison pro-tem. If you are unable to
attend a department meeting, please contact the pro-tem.
LIAISON ROLE
1. Act as a go-between for the department and the Council and also the community, if
needed.
. 2. Attend all department meetings.
3. Know the department well and understand its function and workings.
4. Have all your questions answered, department reports in order and the department
head prepared for all anticipated questions prior to a city council meeting. This should
involve meeting with the department head the week prior to council meetings to have
that person prepared.
5. Do a performance review with the head of the department once a year.
6. If issues arise, document any concerns and discuss them with the department head.
7. Keep the Mayor informed regarding the department—both positive and concerns.
8. If you are Pro-Tem,please attend meetings when the liaison is unable to be there. If
there is an issue, both the liaison and the pro-tem can work together on the issue.
