Park Commission Minutes <br /> August 9, 2018 <br /> Page 2 ' <br /> ------------------------- <br /> Crow Wing Soil and Water came and dug up weeds on the hill this , <br /> summer. Commissioner Johnson stated the playground is great, he also <br /> brought up the outhouse. Mr. Loven stated one side of the outhouse ' <br /> remains locked to help prevent vandalism. Commissioner Melby thought it <br /> would be a good idea to install a LED camera/trail camera to deter the <br /> vandalism. Discussion ensued regarding vandalism and camera <br /> installation. Commissioner Melby will check on pricing for cameras for the <br /> park and bring to the next meeting. Commissioner Sjoblad stated the park <br /> is a nice place and has a great playground. Chair Ronning and Ms. <br /> Malecha were in agreement with improving the stairs to the lake as well <br /> as upgrading the outhouse. Ms. Malecha also would like to see <br /> information at the kiosk be a larger size. <br /> • Gildner Park— Commissioner Sjoblad said it is a nice park but doesn't ' <br /> seem to get used much. Discussion ensued about the amenities: picnic <br /> tables, benches, grill and book exchange. Commissioner Johnson said it <br /> is a very nice park/green space. Mr. Loven stated that the outhouse that <br /> is there now will not be back next year because of non-usage. Mr. Loven <br /> stated that there is minimal maintenance unless there is a board that <br /> breaks on the playground set. Chair Ronning commented that the park <br /> does not get much use and suggested this be the site of the future skate <br /> park. <br /> • Dog Park—Vice Chair Nagel stated that friends of his come from Backus <br /> and south of Brainerd to go to the dog park to socialize. Discussion <br /> ensued and the consensus was this a wonderful addition to our <br /> community. Ms. Malecha suggested more silhouettes on the fence and <br /> more trees to be planted. <br /> • Trailside North —Commissioner Jurchen and Chair Ronning both stated <br /> that they didn't even know the park was there. Vice Chair Nagel stated � <br /> that when the area was a township, discussion was that there needed to <br /> be a park in the area, which is a history on how the park came to be. <br /> Discussion ensued regarding maintenance and use. Mr. Loven said that <br /> there is minimum maintenance and this year was the first year we <br /> fertilized the lawn and with the imgation system the lawn is really looking <br /> great. <br /> • Don Nelson Picnic Area (Historic Fire Tower)—Vice Chair Nagel gave a <br /> history of the area. He stated that planners from the State suggested the <br /> picnic area. Ms. Bittner stated that the County is working with the DNR <br /> with a possibility of the County taking over the park, however, we have <br /> not been nofified of any change of jurisdiction. Mr. Loven said that the <br /> City of Pequot Lakes mows the area and empties the garbage once a <br /> week. Discussion ensued regarding the re-opening of the tower and the <br /> picnic area with possibilities of a RV park/camping site, sled hill, more <br /> hiking trails and possible Christmas light display if the park is tumed over <br /> to the Cifiy. <br />
