Park Commission Minutes August 9, 2018 Page 2 ' ------------------------- Crow Wing Soil and Water came and dug up weeds on the hill this , summer. Commissioner Johnson stated the playground is great, he also brought up the outhouse. Mr. Loven stated one side of the outhouse ' remains locked to help prevent vandalism. Commissioner Melby thought it would be a good idea to install a LED camera/trail camera to deter the vandalism. Discussion ensued regarding vandalism and camera installation. Commissioner Melby will check on pricing for cameras for the park and bring to the next meeting. Commissioner Sjoblad stated the park is a nice place and has a great playground. Chair Ronning and Ms. Malecha were in agreement with improving the stairs to the lake as well as upgrading the outhouse. Ms. Malecha also would like to see information at the kiosk be a larger size. • Gildner Park— Commissioner Sjoblad said it is a nice park but doesn't ' seem to get used much. Discussion ensued about the amenities: picnic tables, benches, grill and book exchange. Commissioner Johnson said it is a very nice park/green space. Mr. Loven stated that the outhouse that is there now will not be back next year because of non-usage. Mr. Loven stated that there is minimal maintenance unless there is a board that breaks on the playground set. Chair Ronning commented that the park does not get much use and suggested this be the site of the future skate park. • Dog Park—Vice Chair Nagel stated that friends of his come from Backus and south of Brainerd to go to the dog park to socialize. Discussion ensued and the consensus was this a wonderful addition to our community. Ms. Malecha suggested more silhouettes on the fence and more trees to be planted. • Trailside North —Commissioner Jurchen and Chair Ronning both stated that they didn't even know the park was there. Vice Chair Nagel stated � that when the area was a township, discussion was that there needed to be a park in the area, which is a history on how the park came to be. Discussion ensued regarding maintenance and use. Mr. Loven said that there is minimum maintenance and this year was the first year we fertilized the lawn and with the imgation system the lawn is really looking great. • Don Nelson Picnic Area (Historic Fire Tower)—Vice Chair Nagel gave a history of the area. He stated that planners from the State suggested the picnic area. Ms. Bittner stated that the County is working with the DNR with a possibility of the County taking over the park, however, we have not been nofified of any change of jurisdiction. Mr. Loven said that the City of Pequot Lakes mows the area and empties the garbage once a week. Discussion ensued regarding the re-opening of the tower and the picnic area with possibilities of a RV park/camping site, sled hill, more hiking trails and possible Christmas light display if the park is tumed over to the Cifiy.
