could be reduced in the future if we find the billboards are working and want to add
more.
Vice-Chair Wallin stated we may need to address why we are choosing the ,500 or
2,00o foot spacing. Is it aesthetic reasons? We should maybe include this information
for other Planning and Zoning Commissions in the future. We want to have the signs
for our community,but not be overrun by signs. It was suggested something could be
included in the Purpose and Intent.
Planning Commission Member Norton inquired if there was a different spacing for
digital signs. Chair Hallan stated we are not differentiating between digital signs and
billboards.
Planning Commission Member Wilson stated billboards block out natural scenery. As a
community, if we want to keep our natural,up north look,we need to limit signs as
much as possible. We need to help our businesses in town,but not businesses in other
communities.
Size was discussed. Mr. Burslie pointed out the language that construction shall be on a
monopole or double post. Council Mernber Pederson was unable to attend tonight,but
wanted Mr. Burslie to state he is not in favor of#he monopole or double post. He feels it
would add to the cost of the sign. With four post signs,landscaping could be added to
mitigate the appearance.
Chair Hallan pointed out they are not posts,they are columns. Planning Commission
Member Leckband stated wood posts deteriorate faster; he is in favor of the language
contained in the amendment.
Sigh height was discussed. Chair Hallan stated the word"maximum"is used twice;
remove one. The amendment states the height shall not exceed 3o feet at road grade;
that is road grade at sign statianing, not a half mile away.
Sign lighting was discussed. This refers to exterior lighting, not the messages on a
digital sign. Clarification should be included to state exterior illumination.
Sign display was discussed. The amendment states 15 seconds. The consensus of the
Planning Commission was to change this to 8 seconds. Color with a definition is also
included. This does not refer to content of the sign and should state"Color of entire
structural support system shall be earth tone".
Sign setbacks were discussed. It was the consensus to remove setback from an at grade
intersection.
MINUTES 3
Pequot Lakes Planning Commission
May i, 2oi8
