Eaccerpt from the unanroved Minutes of the Ma,2, 208
Planning Commission Meetins
APPLICANI': City of Pequot Lakes
Applicant requests an Ordinance Amend.ment regarding Signs
Mr. Burslie explained the amendment included in the packet has been modified by the
City Attorney and the handout is on the table; Staff received the modification late this
afternoon.
Mr. Burslie read through the proposed amendment with the modifications from the City
Attorney. Chair Hallan reminded everyone that a Special Planning Commission
Meeting is scheduled for May 3i, 2oi8. This public hearing can be continued to that
meeting if necessary.
Spacing of 2,00o feet was discussed, as well as the maps included in the packets. The
radius for 2,00o foot spacing is i,000 feet and the radius for 1,50o foot spacing is 750
feet. Two areas north of County Road ii were included on one of the maps. The spacing
could be reduced in the future if we find the billboards are working and want to add
more.
Vice-Chair Wallin stated we may need to address why we are choosing the i,5oo or
2,00o foot spacing. Is it aesthetic reasons? We should maybe include this information
for other Planning and Zoning Commissions in the future. We want to have the signs
for our community, but not be overrun by signs. It was suggested something could be
included in the Purpose and Inent. i
Planning Commission Member Norton inquired if there was a different spacing for
digital signs. Chair Hallan stated we are not differentiating between digital signs and ;
billboards.
Planning Commission Member Wilson stated billboards block out natural scenery. As a
community, if we want to keep our natural,up north look,we need to limit signs as
much as possible. We need to help our businesses in town, but not businesses in other
communities.
Size was discussed. Mr. Burslie pointed out the language that construction shall be on a
monopole or double post. Council Member Pederson was unable to attend tonight, but '
wanted Mr. Burslie to state he is not in favor of the monopole or double post. He feels it
would add to the cost of the sign. With four post signs, landscaping could be added to
mitigate the appearance.
Chair Hallan pointed out they are not posts, they are columns. Planning Commission
Member Leckband stated wood posts deteriorate faster; he is in favor of the language
contained in the amendment.
