that use of the term"slum lord"should be retracted from materials online. It may give
the impression that Pequot Lakes is dealing with slum issues.
Chair Hallan sta.ted this issue was brought to the Planning Commission by the City
Council because they are dealing with a few properties.
Planning Commission Member Wilson agreed that there are only a few properties in
question and agreed with Planning Commission Member Wallin. This is a slippery
slope.
Chair Hallan reminded everyone that the owner of the largest apartment buildings in
town had no issue with an ordinance. It would make for an even playing field. He
further stated that he would like to have a rental ordinance for the City.
Mr. Burslie asked for a straw poll which was 4- 1 to not move forward with a rental
property ordinance at this time.
Planning Commission Member Norton asked if there was some type of information the
City could provide to tenants.
Chair Ha11an pointed out that the League of Minnesota Cities has the insurance and
liability issues sorted out. There is more liability for the City having a police department
than a rental ordinance. We shouldn't be making a decision tonight based on liability of
the City.
Planning Commission Member Wallin stated this doesn't seem to be a pressing issue at
this time. If it does become an issue this can be reconsidered at that time.
Planning Commission Member Birch stated he was uncomfortable including criminal
background checks.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES;
A motion was made by Planning Commission Member Wilson, seconded by
Planning Commission Member Wallin, to approve the November 16, 2oi
Minutes.
