MN/DOT Policy for Roundabout Areas

From: Hughes, Anthony(DOT) [mailto:tony.hughes@state.mn.us]
Sent: Monday,July 17, 2017 2:42 PM
To: Nancy Malecha <nmalecha@pequotlakes-mn.ov>
Cc: Indihar, Matthew(DOT) <matthew.indihar@state.mn.us>; Munsch, Richard (DOT)
<richard.munsch@state.mn.us>
Subject: RE: Roundabout Plantings
Nancy,
I did some checking and there is no official policy for what can and can't be done as far as plantings
and/or other potential enhancements in the roundabout areas. I talked to the designer in our
Landscaping Unit that will be doing the follow-up landscaping project after the Hwy 371 Design-Build
Project is complete and he told me there may be an opportunity to include some of what the city is
looking for in the overall landscaping project, particularly if the city is willing to take over maintenance
of the landscaping elements in the roundabout areas in the future. For your information, Matt Indihar,
the District's assigned Project Manager for the future landscaping project, has told me coordination
meetings regarding the landscaping project will be arranged later this summer/fall.
Any elements that the city would like to propose beyond landscaping would have to be submitted via a
permit working through Rich Munsch in our Permits Office. To be perfectly honest, I don't think there is
anything we will be able allow yet this year because the Hwy 371 Design-Build Project will be ongoing
until later this fall, however, if the Park Commission has some ideas they would like the department to
` consider you should have them coordinate with Rich Munsch. I've cc'd Matt and Rich on this note so
they knows something might be coming their way in the future.
Tony Hughes, P.E.
Resident Engineer
MnDOT District 3- Baxter
Office: 218-828-5735
tony.huhes@state.mn.us
 DEPARTMENT OF
TRANSPQRTATICN
