Mayo Lake Nature Preserve Forest Management Proposal from Keith Simar
August 16,2017
Potential Work Projects for Volunteers:
1. Build 6 wood duck nesting boxes for installation along Mayo Lake
2. Build owl and bluebird nesting boxes as described in Woodworkinfor Wildlife.
3. Improve view of Mayo Lake at the park bench site by cutting hazel brush. Install two wood duck
nesting boxes to be visible from bench.
4. Remove hazard trees and storm damaged trees along walking trail. This is chainsaw work and
also hand labor to pile slashings, branches which will be burned at a later date.
5. Scalp(remove sod and competing brush) planting spots in preparation for a future tree planting
project.
6. Prepare a picnic site in Norway pine grove on south end of the Preserve. Combination of
chainsaw work to cut up dead trees and remove storm-damaged trees. Some cutting of hazel
brush. Install a couple of picnic tables and garbage cans.
I would like to propose a fall volunteer day, possibly this fall, maybe an October Saturday AM slot. To
reduce liability, I and a volunteer of my choice who have chainsaw safety training could do some
chainsaw work ahead of time and the volunteers on the work day could pile the cut debris, cut hazel
brush with hand tools, put up nesting boxes that have been built ahead of time, prepare seedling
planting site with hand tools. We could advertise for volunteers in the Journal Echo ahead of time. Or if
you need to take more time to get the City Council on board and approve the use of volunteers,we
could plan for the work day around Earth Day next spring. I am a Rotarian and Rotary International is
trying to plant approx. l.2 million trees around the world, one for each Rotarian. We could possibly
have a Rotary tree planting project next spring.
