00Y epf Pequ t eS NEW BUSINESS—TRAILBLAZING SIGNS Agenda Item: 7(a) Background Information: Last month we discussed the need for Trailblazing Signs that are required by MN/DOT for a business to be included on a Specific Service Sign on State Highway 371 (Tasty Pizza). Several other businesses have requested signage along Patriot Avenue. The City Council has directed the Planning Commission to recommend a policy to regulate signage along the newly acquired right-of-way. The following is an excerpt from the draft Minutes: c. Specific Service Signs, Discussion Mr. Burslie explained the Staff Report. Zoning Specialist Bittner pointed out the location of the Specific Service Signs MN/DOT will allow along the Expressway. She further explained the need for a Specific Service Sign, or a Trail Blazing Sign, for Tasty Pizza. The City has also received requests for signage along Patriot Avenue directing traffic into town. There is a Business District sign directing j traffic onto Patriot Avenue. Discussion ensued regarding what type of signage could be allowed along Patriot Avenue and the number of signs: • MN/DOT will allow 8 businesses on the 2 Specific Service Signs along the Expressway at the Patriot Avenue exit; • Tasty Pizza needs permission from the City and the County for Trail Blazing Signs; • Other businesses have expressed the need for signage on Patriot Avenue; • Should signage be allowed for businesses visible from Patriot Avenue or just those businesses that are not visible from Patriot Avenue; • MN/DOT will allow 8 businesses on the 2 Specific Service Signs along the Expressway at the County Road 17/Patriot Avenue exit; • Trail Blazing Signs may be necessary at the Rasmussen Road intersection; • Trail Blazing Signs may be necessary at the intersection of County Road 17 and Patriot Avenue; • How many signs do we want to allow; • The signs need to be 300 feet apart; • How many individual businesses per sign; • Who should get them and why; • Limit to restaurants,food, no specific businesses so it isn't so cluttered; most people use their smart phones; Pequot Lakes Staff Report 7(a)-i August 17,2017
