RAF 1
I...
October 1, 2011
Sheriffs Message:
Crow Wing County Sheriffs Office
Sheriff Todd O. Dahl
Community Update
Public Safety has always been a primary concern that we
have at our office. This issue of our newsletter is dedicated to
two topics that we know will catch your attention.
In the last three years, there have been nineteen deaths due to
Deer /Motorist crashes in the state of Minnesota and sixteen of
those were involving motorcycles. Each loss is extremely trag-
ic, however, education has remained our primary concern and
always will be as long as I am your elected Sheriff.
Teaching and simple reminders are also important when it
comes to the safe use of space heaters and other portable heat-
ing devices. Improper use can make the difference between a
home that is safe and warm and one that becomes the scene of
a tragic event.
We would ask that you exercise caution when ,
caring for yourself and your families this fall and ! _'
ty safe.
1400
1200
1000
Soo
600
400
200
Third Quarter -2011
Top Ten Calls for Service
4 p,`'aa ads e`Oo 9`dQP,o003,oa
S"Q SJSd" Oa 1Y° ^ic
Other services provided by the Sheriffs Office (not included above):
Warrant Arrests ............. ............................223
Emergency Medical Calls ..........................291
4'
Fire............................... ............................... 32
Gun Permits issued (purchase & carry) ....172
Boat and Water Event and Raft Permits ..... 35
Subject: Fourth Quarter Update
Watch out for the deer
Fall is a time of colorful leaves, shorter days, cooler nights, and the wildlife
seems abundant as they prepare for the coming of winter. Fall is also the
time when we see an increase in Deer /Motorist collisions. Hitting a deer
or swerving to miss one can be deadly. Here area few tips to remember
while driving on our roadways.
• Drive at safe speeds and always buckle up.
• Slow down in areas known to have deer.
• Constantly scan and continue to slow down if you see anything that
looks suspicious.
• Don't swerve to avoid a deer — instead, apply your brakes and if possi-
ble drive around at a controlled speed.
• Remember where there is one deer there usually are more.
• Deer do unpredictable things so always proceed with extreme caution.
• Remember that a stunned or injured deer may recover enough to
jump up and attempt to run off. Once again, be sure to exercise cau-
tion.
• If an injured deer does not move off the road, please be sure to report
it to the MN DNR or your local law enforcement agency.
Animals that are considered road -kill can be claimed by any Minnesota
Resident who possess an authorized permit. To obtain a permit, please
contact your local law enforcement agency.
Staying Safe and Warm
The cooler temperatures of Fall can be downright cold here in the North Coun-
try and it won't be long before we all start looking for ways to stay warm in our
homes and garages. Take the time for routine maintenance prior to using any
alternative heating device.
Check for frayed cords
Test your fire and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they are work-
ing properly
Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year
by a qualified professional.
As a reminder, always use caution when using any heating device. If a device is
too close to furniture, window treatments or clothing it could become a fire
hazard. Always use your portable heater in an area that is clear and away from
where young children play., and never leave your heater unattended. If you
leave or go to bed, tum it off and unplug it from the wall as an extra safety pre-
caution.
Upcoming Events:
Veteran's Day ...... ............................... ........................November 11, 2011
Thanksgiving ....... ............................... .......................November 24, 2011
Christmas ............. ............................... .......................December 25, 2011
With courage, honor and integrity, we protect the rights and dignity of all citizens.
In partnership with our communities, we strive to preserve the peace and are dedicated to excellence in the delivery of public safety services.
